My Top Tips when Setting Targets for Children

By Richard Kizis - Added 21st of December 2008

Setting Targets for Children

  •  Focus on one area of the child’s behaviour that will have the biggest impact on your family when it improves. Don’t try to change everything about your Childs behaviour at once.
  • If rewarding your child for positive improvements make the targets achievable and have small rewards often, rather than one big reward over a long period of time. By having long periods between rewards you will be setting the child up to fail this will result to a return to the normal behaviour, losing confidence as a parent.
  • Always keep your eye open for any opportunity to praise your child no matter how small. We all like a pat on the back sometimes so does your child.
  •  When the child has had a positive change and hit your targets, never forget to reward your child. You may think it’s as trivial but you can rest assure your child will not forget and start thinking you’re not doing your part of the bargain so why should I.
  •  Never expected things to change over night.
  •   Always look at the positives; if your child has only hit your target one day out of seven, focuses on the one day that is positive, as an achievement.
  •  Always start a new day fresh, never carry negative feelings over into the next day.
  •  Always expect setbacks, life never runs smoothly for any of us.
