Autism in School
By Sally Bates - Added 16th of November 2008Parents of children with autism often say that other people simply think their child is naughty.
Autistic children do not like a change in routine. When at school it is best to try to keep to the same routine as much as possible. Obviously there are times when there will be a change to a school day. When this happens it is best to try to explain to the child in advance why there has to be a change but also try to reassure them that this will not happen everyday.
Letting the child have their own picture/visual timetable in front of them is a good idea so that it can give them some structure for that day and make them feel more secure. A variety of pictures can be used - photographs, drawings, symbols etc- depending on the child's understanding . What is important is that the timetable is clear and does not give too much information at once.
It is also important to use simple language when talking to the child speak clearly and slowly.
Autistic children like a lot of praise so try to praise them as much as possible. Small rewards are also a good idea. They seem to like colourful stickers.
